Chapter 13: Geneva, October 5, 2013

On a crisp Monday morning, under cover with a German passport and the credentials of a software engineer, Moti arrived in Geneva to attend the European Intel Development Forum. The Intel Development Forum was an annual mecca for techies and geeks who wanted insight into the following year’s trends and developments. These brief encounters in places like Stanford, MIT, or companies such as Intel and Microsoft gave Moti insight as to what was happening in the real world of technology development. But they also put up a mirror in Moti’s face as to the life he could have had, had he not stayed in the military, a life complete with free thinkers, intellectuals, and research for the sake of research to build a better world. It pained Moti deeply for what he left behind. People came to work, enriched their minds, and then went home to feed their dogs and play with their children. It was a world so romantic and foreign that all he could do was shake his head and remove the thoughts from his mind so as to not wander off too far in thought. In the end, as always, he was on a mission. He was on a covert operation where his identity had to remain confidential.

Moti entered the panel discussion on network security. He had let his sandy red hair grow in, and he wore jeans and a Microsoft T-shirt. He looked like a handsome techie in his mid-thirties. The session was one of the many technical tracks at the conference. He was a few minutes late, and the lights had been turned down for the computer projector. Moti took a seat in the back row with - as always - a view of both exits. He scanned the room and something caught him off guard, and he was jolted almost right out of his seat. Even from behind there was no mistake. The short black hair, the straight back, the line of her neck. Yasmin was sitting three rows in front of him. She did not turn around. He suddenly felt uneasy inside, almost queasy, feeling emotions he could not ever remember having. Her hair was still cropped short, almost boyish, and she was wearing a crisp grey business suit with thin metallic spectacles. He was not directly behind her and had a good view of the left side of her face and nose. God, those cheekbones. He had an incredible urge to jump over the seats and hold her.

Despite his years of training, leading missions, commanding men, and coping under extreme stress, Moti felt paralyzed and did not know what to do. His heart raced, and he sat frozen. Someone moved a chair in the back, and she turned her head to see. Their eyes met and he saw her full face. She had not changed - the same deep brown eyes and forceful presence. She smiled and lifted her hand to her mouth. Moti’s heart almost burst, and his hands trembled.
